An internal build of the new Chromium-powered Edge has leaked, revealing new details of the browser.

The most interesting and useful of these is that the browser will include a switch which will let you use Google’s Chrome extension webs store (Opera has a similar capability). Microsoft will still be running their own extension store, but end users will have the choice of ignoring it. I expect for enterprise users this will be more tightly controlled.

In the current build of the browser, it will offer to import your favourites, passwords, and browsing history from Chrome or Edge, which should reduce the pain of migrating. It will also ask you to pick a style for the new tab page.

The current version is otherwise somewhat immature.  It will offer the ability to read a page aloud, but not to ink on a page, sync anything besides favourites, has no dark mode or the ability to set aside tabs.  In the current iteration, it is however quite fast, and Microsoft is expected to address the deficits in a number of months.

The availability of Chrome extensions is a very welcome development, but of course to compete Microsoft does not only need to have many of Chrome’s features but all of them and some more too.
